The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling on the public to prioritize road safety following a devastating accident in Nadaro, Tailevu, which resulted in the death of two individuals and left five others hospitalized. Preliminary investigations by the police reveal that a 27-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle, crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with another car. Tragically, both the 27-year-old driver and a 48-year-old driver of the second vehicle lost their lives in the collision.
LTA Chief Executive, Irimaia Rokosawa, expressed his condolences and raised concerns about the frequency of such incidents. He pointed out that this crash comes just days after another accident claimed three lives on Fiji’s roads, emphasizing the pressing need for drivers to adopt safe practices. Rokosawa noted common causes of accidents, including speeding, loss of control, driver fatigue, reckless overtaking, and dangerous driving.
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns and enforcement measures, many road users continue to disregard traffic regulations, posing risks to themselves and others. The LTA remains committed to reinforcing responsible road use among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Working in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and municipal councils, the authority plans to conduct regular enforcement operations to promote road safety.
In response to allegations about a social media video that purportedly shows five people drinking and driving in the vehicle involved in the accident, the police have launched an investigation. This revelation highlights the persistent challenge of reckless driving behavior in Fiji.
While recent statistics indicate a decrease in the overall road death toll compared to previous years, incidents like these underscore the continuing need for vigilance and strict adherence to traffic laws. The LTA is hopeful that with increased awareness and community cooperation, the trend of road tragedies can be reversed, ensuring safer roads for all.
