The Fiji Police Force is in mourning following the tragic loss of an officer who died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. The incident occurred while the officer was engaged in joint traffic operations with the Land Transport Authority in Labasa.
The 46-year-old officer was conducting a traffic stop on Labasa Nasekula Road on Saturday night when a truck, allegedly driven by a 45-year-old man, struck two parked vehicles and subsequently hit the two men standing by the roadside. The officer became trapped under the truck and was quickly taken to Labasa Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition before sadly succumbing to his injuries early this morning. Meanwhile, the second victim remains hospitalized.
The suspect in the incident is expected to face questioning soon as authorities continue their investigation. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu expressed the organization’s condolences to the officer’s family, emphasizing that this tragic event highlights the daily dangers faced by police officers in the line of duty.
Tudravu raised concerns about the increasing number of road accidents and fatalities, urging drivers and all road users to take road safety seriously. He emphasized that thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, and the necessary support will be provided in accordance with the officer’s final rites.
This unfortunate incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks law enforcement personnel encounter while fulfilling their duties. Community awareness and adherence to road safety measures can help prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
