A heavy rain alert remains in force for the whole of the Fiji group as a weak trough of low pressure, accompanied by cloud and showers, affects the islands through tomorrow. Northerly winds continue to prevail across the country. This bulletin was issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 10:45am on Tuesday 21 April 2026. For full details on the alert, refer to the special weather bulletin on heavy rain at https://www.met.gov.fj/alerts/.
Through to midnight tomorrow most places can expect generally fine weather apart from afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. Showers will become more frequent and are expected to increase to rain later today, with isolated heavy falls possible. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Rain should begin easing over most places Wednesday night. Winds will remain moderate from the north, with gusty conditions possible in areas experiencing heavy falls, and seas will be moderate.
On Thursday cloudier conditions with some showers are forecast for parts of the eastern and central islands. Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, eastern Macuata and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and neighbouring islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups can expect cloudy periods with occasional showers. Elsewhere will be mainly fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy falls possible. Winds are expected to shift lighter to moderate easterly to fresh easterly on Thursday and seas will trend moderate to rough.
Location-specific forecasts generally reflect the national picture: Navua, Suva and Nausori are expected to be fine apart from brief showers, with afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms and heavy falls possible (Min 23°C, Max 31°C). Similar conditions are forecast for Natadradave/Korovou (Min 23, Max 31) and the Coral Coast/Sigatoka area (Min 23, Max 30). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba, and Tavua/Rakiraki should expect brief showers with later thunderstorm activity and heavy falls (Min 23, Max around 30–31). Yasawa/Mamanuca, Savusavu, Taveuni, Nabouwalu, Lau and Lomaiviti groups are also likely to see brief showers and evening thunderstorms with heavy falls at times; temperatures across the islands range roughly from lows of 22–25°C to highs of 30–32°C. Kadavu will see some showers with afternoon or evening thunderstorms and heavy falls expected. Rotuma will be affected by an east to northeast flow and a weak trough from the east later today, producing occasional heavy showers and a few thunderstorms (Min 25, Max 32).
Practical points: the heavy rain alert covers the whole country and localised flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas is possible while the trough persists. Gusty winds are likely where heavy rain occurs. Mariners should note moderate seas at present, with conditions expected to become moderate to rough in places on Thursday; exercise caution on exposed coasts and when undertaking small-craft operations.
