Fiji-New Zealand Trade Hits New High: What Lies Ahead?

Trade between Fiji and New Zealand reached NZ$1.39 billion (F$1.89 billion) as of the March quarter this year. David Dewar, New Zealand Trade Commissioner to the Pacific in Fiji, announced this figure at the Fiji-NZ Business Council cocktail event in Suva. This marks the first time trade between the two nations has surpassed NZ$500 million in Fijian exports to New Zealand.

During this period, exports from Fiji increased significantly, amounting to NZ$523 million (F$712.7 million) for the year ending in March. Dewar expressed appreciation for the efforts of businesses in the region, highlighting that this achievement reflects the hard work of those involved in promoting trade between the nations.

Dewar also mentioned that he expects to see the trade figures for the following quarter soon, as he remains optimistic about continued growth despite recent challenges in travel to Fiji. He noted that many investment and development projects are underway, indicating a promising collaboration between New Zealand and Fijian companies moving forward.

Furthermore, Dewar pointed out that Fiji welcomed 98,332 visitors in July, including 27,676 New Zealand tourists. He emphasized the strong trade relations and the potential for further opportunities for New Zealand businesses in Fiji.

Tourism and travel services are significant contributors to Fiji’s exports to New Zealand, alongside other goods such as cane sugar, bottled water, fish, wood, and gold.
