Fiji’s President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has called for a concerted national effort to tackle urgent social issues, including the alarming rise in HIV cases. During the opening of the 2026 parliamentary session on Monday, he emphasized the critical relationship between illicit drug use and the increasing spread of HIV in the country.

Ratu Naiqama praised the collaborative efforts of faith leaders, police, and community organizations in addressing this pressing health crisis. He noted that these groups have shown exceptional leadership in combating drug abuse, which significantly contributes to the HIV epidemic. “The fight against HIV demands courage, compassion, and the active participation of every Fijian,” he stated.

The President articulated that addressing social and health challenges must go hand in hand with fostering an inclusive national development strategy. He highlighted the necessity for economic growth to benefit rural, maritime, and interior communities, emphasizing the importance of creating decent jobs, enhancing household well-being, and ensuring equal access to resources.

He particularly acknowledged the role of traditional institutions, notably the iTaukei system, as essential partners in development efforts. Ratu Naiqama called for enhanced collaboration between the government and traditional leaders to support sustainable land and resource management while preserving cultural identity. He asserted, “When aligned with national priorities, these resources form the foundation for resilience, dignity, and shared prosperity.”

The President also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to constitutional review, public participation, and transparent governance. He described these initiatives as vital for promoting national unity, safeguarding human rights, and building public trust in democratic institutions.

In a concluding appeal, Ratu Naiqama urged lawmakers, faith leaders, and citizens to unite in addressing social challenges, enhancing public health measures, and ensuring that Fiji’s development remains inclusive, sustainable, and anchored in shared values. His message underscores a hopeful vision for collaboration and resilience in the face of adversity.
