Fiji Honors Air India Crash Victims with Heartfelt Shanti Yag Ceremony

The Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji organized a Shanti Yag ceremony at the Shiv Mandir in Suva today, honoring the victims of the recent tragic Air India crash that occurred near Ahmedabad, India. This Hindu prayer ceremony for peace was attended by distinguished figures including members of Fiji’s Parliament—Lenora Qereqeretabua, Ioane Naivalarua, and Agni Deo Singh—alongside diplomats such as India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, and British High Commissioner Dr. Brian Jones, as well as members of the public.

During the ceremony, Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and emphasized the collective need for prayers to prevent such tragedies from recurring. He stated, “We all pray to the Almighty that the souls that were lost in the unfortunate incident are accorded Moksha,” referring to the belief that following death, souls attain a state of divine bliss.

Dr. Brian Jones also addressed attendees, reflecting on the shared grief stemming from the disaster. He noted the community’s loss and the unity formed through collective mourning, saying, “People of Indian heritage have built a global family… and the prayers offered will give strength and comfort to those who have lost.”

High Commissioner Suneet Mehta conveyed his appreciation to the Fijian government for its support and solidarity during this challenging time. He poignantly remarked that when tragedy strikes, it affects not just a nation, but also the hearts of those who hold India dear, reinforcing the importance of community and compassion in moments of sorrow.

The Air India flight tragically crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, claiming the lives of 241 passengers, including 11 children and two infants.

This poignant event resonates with other acts of solidarity and remembrance held globally, including vigils attended by diverse communities in London, echoing the collective yearning for healing and peace. Such communal gatherings reflect a heartfelt response to sorrow, encouraging a spirit of unity and support as we navigate the complexities of loss, ultimately fostering deeper bonds across communities.

As Fiji continues to witness expressions of compassion and solidarity, the prayer ceremony serves as a reminder of the resilience found in unity, offering a hopeful perspective as the community collectively seeks healing and strength in the face of adversity.
