The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs, in collaboration with the Sugar Industry, has extended significant assistance to 23 sugarcane farmers in Fiji’s Northern Division under the New Farmers and Lease Premium Assistance Program. This initiative reflects the commitment of Minister Charan Jeath Singh and the government to overcome the longstanding barriers of land acquisition and lease premiums that hinder sugarcane production.

Minister Singh emphasized the critical impact access to land has on farming, stating that many farmers, both aspiring and established, struggle with land-related challenges that limit their ability to expand and sustain operations. The program is designed to empower these farmers by providing the security and financial aid needed to pursue growth confidently.

The government’s strategy involves not only addressing land acquisition challenges but also ensuring the longevity and vitality of the sugar industry through enhanced land tenure security. Singh highlighted that by supporting both new acquisitions and renewing existing leases, farmers receive much-needed relief, allowing them to focus on farming with an assurance of continuity and stability.

The Ministry works closely with entities such as the iTaukei Land Trust Board and the Ministry of Lands to tackle lease challenges, thus facilitating a secure farming future. A recipient of this initiative, Peni Ramulo from Yaudigi Village, expressed gratitude for a grant of $1,100, which he says will substantially alleviate his financial challenges and aid in upgrading his farm.

This initiative mirrors earlier government efforts in different regions, where similar grants have benefited numerous farmers, including mechanization support in some instances. This ongoing governmental support aims to revitalize Fiji’s sugar industry by not only mitigating immediate land challenges but also laying the groundwork for future sustainability and growth.

In conclusion, the government’s proactive engagement through these grants signifies a hopeful outlook for the sugar industry in Fiji. By ensuring stable land tenure and supporting modern farming practices, the government aims to create a robust and thriving agricultural sector that can significantly contribute to the country’s economic resilience.
