The government has stated that there are currently no plans for succession in the Prime Minister’s role, insisting that leadership matters will not be addressed while legal appeals are active. Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya confirmed this stance at a recent press conference when asked about the possibility of the Prime Minister resigning and creating a leadership vacuum.

Tabuya emphasized the importance of honoring the judicial process, indicating that the appeal could take considerable time as it travels through the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court. She reassured that until this process is concluded, neither the governing party nor the Prime Minister will discuss the issue of leadership transition. “There’s no urgency to it because the appeal process will take some time,” she remarked.

Furthermore, Tabuya revealed that the Cabinet has unanimously rejected any recommendations for the Prime Minister to resign, expressing strong support for him to continue leading the government. “It was a resounding sentiment that we would not accept his resignation. There is unanimous support for the honourable Prime Minister to continue to lead this country and continue to lead us,” she stated.

Highlighting the legal framework, Tabuya reinforced the government’s commitment to the rule of law, detailing that the legal avenues being pursued are a reflection of Fiji’s justice system working properly. She stated, “It is the rule of law, and we respect the rule of law. We respect the process. Certainly, the executive is separate from the judiciary.”

Acknowledging the recent High Court decision, Tabuya affirmed that the government intends to utilize all lawful options available to the Prime Minister in relation to the appeal process. “We respect the decision of the High Court, and we will be able to access what is legally available to the honourable Prime Minister in terms of the appeal process,” she concluded.

This reaffirmation of leadership stability amid ongoing legal proceedings reflects a commitment to governance based on due process, providing assurance to stakeholders that the government is maintaining its focus and respect for institutional integrity.
