Taekwondo Fiji is gearing up for an exciting year ahead with plans to organize three significant tournaments in the country. National coach Neelu Nand emphasized that these events are designed to encourage young athletes to maintain consistency in their training. He mentioned the importance of these tournaments as an opportunity for the athletes to demonstrate their skills and earn a place in the national team.
The proposed schedule for the tournaments suggests they will take place around the first term school holiday, during the middle of the year, and again in December. Nand has reached out to major clubs to express their interest in hosting these events. While the hosting arrangements are yet to be finalized, it is likely that Civic Taekwondo, Nakasi, and Suva clubs will host the tournaments in sequence.
Currently, there are nine clubs affiliated with Fiji Taekwondo, including Civic, Suva, Master Ra, Nakasi, Nausori, Sawani, Ba, and Nadi. Nand also highlighted that the organization witnessed participation from 150 young athletes previously and aims to increase this number to around 200 for the upcoming tournaments.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach to nurturing young talent in Taekwondo and fostering community involvement in sports. The potential influx of participants will not only benefit the athletes but also create an engaging environment for the sport at a grassroots level.
As Fiji Taekwondo prepares for this promising opportunity, it can inspire a new generation of athletes and contribute positively to sports culture in the country.
