Fiji Faces Dry Spell: Urgent Call for Water Conservation

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport is urging the public to conserve water as dry weather conditions are expected to impact water supply in the upcoming months.

Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau explained that Fiji experiences two main seasons: the Wet Season from November to April and the Dry Season from May to October. Currently, the country is in its Dry Season, with various meteorological stations reporting minimal rainfall.

Recent rainfall data from the past three months shows that Fiji is firmly in its Dry Season, with precipitation levels significantly below the normal monthly average. Consequently, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has indicated that several water reservoirs are reaching critical levels.

With the dry conditions likely to continue for at least the next two months, the Ministry is collaborating with relevant authorities and key sectors such as Tourism, Health, and Education to monitor the situation and implement measures to mitigate the impact, while keeping the public updated.

“We encourage all residents to use water wisely during this time to ensure that available resources can meet essential needs nationwide,” Tuisawau stated. He suggested simple actions, like limiting water use for non-essential tasks, repairing leaks, and reusing water whenever possible, to help make a significant difference.

WAF will keep a close watch on the situation and provide necessary updates. Additionally, the Ministry is working alongside the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to deliver water to affected areas, including maritime communities.
