Opposition MP and member of the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights, Faiyaz Koya, has expressed his admiration for the strong quality of public submissions regarding the Education Bill, particularly on the contentious issue of corporal punishment. During the committee’s recent meeting with village elders and community representatives in Navua, including traditional leaders from Namosi, a wide range of views was gathered on the proposed legislation.

Koya noted that many of the submissions were well-articulated, factual, and passionately expressed. He emphasized that a significant majority of the contributors from across the nation are advocating for the reinstatement of corporal punishment in some capacity within the educational system. “Currently, as it stands, the overwhelming majority in terms of input from the public has been that you should bring it back in some form or another,” he stated.

Acknowledging Fiji’s commitments to international conventions and constitutional regulations, Koya made it clear that the committee’s primary duty is to actively listen to the public’s concerns. He urged that the discussion surrounding education should be kept free from political agendas, emphasizing that the focus should remain on the educational framework and the future well-being of children in Fiji.

While there are diverse opinions regarding corporal punishment, Koya pointed out a noticeable trend toward a growing consensus that there is a need to revisit the framework for discipline within schools. The committee is dedicated to finding a balanced approach that considers legal obligations, public sentiment, and the long-term interests of students.

The consultations on the Education Bill will continue as the committee travels throughout the country, striving to gather as many perspectives as possible. This process signifies an inclusive effort to shape the education system while balancing community values and international standards.
