The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) has firmly stated that World Boxing (WB) is the only international boxing organization recognized in Fiji for amateur boxers aspiring to compete in high-profile events such as the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, and Pacific Games. This clarification comes against the backdrop of ongoing discussions regarding Fiji’s re-registration with the International Boxing Association (IBA).
FASANOC CEO Vanessa Kilner emphasized the organization’s alignment with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which has ceased recognition of the IBA due to historical issues. “As the National Olympic Committee for Fiji, we take our cue from the IOC, which now recognizes World Boxing instead of IBA,” Kilner noted, reinforcing that this standard has been embraced by national Olympic committees globally to ensure a clear competitive pathway for boxers.
Kilner explained that Fiji’s decision to adopt World Boxing as the recognized body simplifies the journey for local boxers aiming for Olympic qualifications. She made it clear that participation in events sanctioned by the IBA is not permissible, as those members do not meet the established criteria.
For local amateur boxers gearing up for upcoming competitions, it is crucial to adhere to the guidelines set by the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association. Kilner advised that aligning with this body will bolster athletes’ chances of successfully navigating the competitive landscape of IOC-sanctioned events. “If you participate in World Boxing sanctioned events, your pathway and support will be strengthened,” she stated.
Furthermore, Kilner urged boxers who have been invited to compete in IBA-sanctioned events or any other contests organized outside of World Boxing to seek guidance from the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association. This step is essential to ensure their eligibility for prestigious Commonwealth and Olympic Games is not jeopardized, highlighting the commitment of Fiji’s boxing community to uphold integrity and transparency in the sport. The focus remains on creating robust opportunities for athletes to excel on the global stage.
