The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has clarified that the termination of its Senior Medical Officer (SMO) at its headquarters in Suva is an employment-related matter. This response comes after the Fiji Medical Association expressed concerns regarding the situation. FCS emphasized that the officer has the right to pursue the case legally, including through the Employment Relations Court if he wishes to contest the decision.
Regarding allegations of racial discrimination, FCS stated that it treats such issues very seriously. The matter is currently under internal review, and disciplinary action is being taken against the senior officer involved. An Assistant Commissioner is scheduled to travel to Lautoka next week to formally address the situation.
In light of the current vacancy in the Medical Officer post, FCS announced that this position will be advertised soon. Meanwhile, to ensure continuity in medical services, two nurse practitioners have been assigned to manage operations in the central and eastern divisions—one based in Suva and another in Naboro. Additionally, a third nurse practitioner, who was initially appointed, has resigned before starting the role, and this position will also be re-advertised.
FCS remains dedicated to upholding professional standards and ensuring that healthcare services for those in their care meet the highest standards. They are committed to addressing concerns transparently and fairly.
This timely response reflects FCS’s commitment to professionalism, as it actively seeks to resolve employment matters while maintaining healthcare standards. With new openings on the horizon, the organization is optimistic about reinforcing its medical staff.
