Over 100,000 individuals in Fiji have recently gained access to clean water through the implementation of targeted community projects. This significant achievement was celebrated during the launch of the MF602 Rural WASH Programme, a $2.1 million initiative led by New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, Charlotte Darlow.

During the event, Darlow emphasized the importance of local involvement in these water projects, highlighting that sustainable access to clean water depends heavily on community engagement. Villagers, school representatives, and local leaders are encouraged to participate actively in the planning, protection, and maintenance of the water systems.

Darlow further articulated that community engagement encompasses not just the physical infrastructure but also extends to educating residents on topics such as water usage, hygiene, and the safeguarding of water resources. She noted, “I can absolutely see the work that’s been put into upskilling a community so that they understand how to take care of and maintain the system.”

Professor Biman Prasad, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, echoed these sentiments, describing the initiative as a crucial step towards uplifting community health and dignity. He remarked, “You have not only delivered infrastructure, but have also brought dignity, health, and hope to thousands of families over so many years.” Prasad called for continued efforts to foster local capacity, ensuring that clean water will remain a reliable resource for future generations.

This initiative follows earlier projects aimed at improving water access in various regions, such as the introduction of groundwater systems and the construction of sanitation units across rural communities. Previous efforts have indicated a dedicated commitment from the government and various organizations to enhance public health and infrastructure throughout Fiji.

The long-term vision of the MF602 Rural WASH Programme reflects a tireless commitment to ensuring that all Fijians, especially those in rural and underserved areas, can enjoy the fundamental right to clean water. As ongoing investments and community participation continue to evolve, there is optimism that these developments will lead to improved quality of life, health, and economic opportunities across Fiji.
