A heavy rain alert has been issued for the entire Fiji group as a trough of low pressure approaches, promising showers, thunderstorms, and potential flooding over the next few days. The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi announced the alert today, indicating that the cloud cover and showers currently affecting eastern regions are set to spread across the nation.

Weather officials predict that occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms will particularly impact eastern Viti Levu, which includes the Greater Suva to Nausori-Tailevu North corridor, as well as other regions like Interior Ra, Naitasiri, Serua-Namosi, Interior Nadroga/Navosa, Northern Bua, Eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, alongside Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

From tomorrow, the forecast expects a gradual development of occasional rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and heavy downpours in many areas. Authorities have alerted residents to possible consequences, such as flash flooding in low-lying settlements and communities, alongside disruptions for businesses and Irish crossings. Urban areas with inadequate drainage could experience surface flooding, potentially causing traffic challenges.

As Fiji prepares for these weather changes, it’s essential for communities to stay informed, heed advisories from authorities, and take necessary precautions to minimize the impact of the expected heavy rains.
