The chairperson of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), Isoa Kaloumaira, expressed his belief that young athletes today are indeed fortunate to have the opportunity to showcase their talents on national television. This sentiment was shared during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between FBC and the Fiji Secondary School Athletics Association (FSSAA), which intends to broadcast upcoming Zone competitions and the three-day Fiji Finals live on FBC Sports.
Reflecting on his own experiences as a young athlete, Kaloumaira emphasized the significance of this live coverage, stating that athletes today possess privileges that weren’t available in earlier years. He remarked, “For most of us sitting around here, we did go through this but that was before all these things came on board – we were in the early days, so students nowadays are quite fortunate.” This enhanced visibility, he noted, not only benefits athletes in Fiji but also allows those in the global diaspora to connect with their roots.
Recurring themes from previous similar initiatives highlight the importance of live event broadcasts in motivating young athletes. Marika Uluinaceva, the FSSAA President, previously underscored that such exposure could serve as an inspiration for athletes and provide increased opportunities for interaction with family and alumni who may not be able to attend the events in person. The live coverage is seen not just as a way to showcase talent but also as an avenue to open doors to potential scouting opportunities.
The upcoming National Championship Coca-Cola Games, set for April 24-26 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, will mark a significant occasion in the athletics calendar. Fans can expect comprehensive coverage of this crucial event on FBC Sports, fostering greater community support for school sports and nurturing a culture of athletic excellence in Fiji.
The optimism surrounding this partnership is palpable, promising an inspiring showcase of the determination and skills of the youth. Such initiatives pave the way for future developments in sports across the region, reinforcing community ties and the celebration of Fijian culture and talent.
