Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Paula Baleilevuka, underscored the essential role that ports play as trade gateways and economic drivers during a recent Bilateral Workshop on Port Technology attended by representatives from Fiji and Japan. He acknowledged the challenges Fiji faces, which include the impacts of climate change, the need for resilient infrastructure, evolving international standards, and technological advancements.

At the workshop, Baleilevuka highlighted the significance of enhancing the planning, construction, and management of port and maritime systems to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable maritime transport, which is crucial for the economy and the livelihoods of the Fijian people. He expressed that the timing of the workshop is critical, as it presents an invaluable opportunity to learn from Japan’s expertise in port planning, disaster resilience, and advanced technology.

This collaborative effort aligns with Fiji’s ongoing focus on infrastructure and connectivity improvements, as outlined in recent discussions highlighting infrastructure development strategies involving international partners such as Japan, the U.S., and Australia. These discussions emphasize mobilizing private capital, enhancing transportation systems, and improving overall national infrastructure resilience.

Baleilevuka also expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for its support in facilitating regional cooperation and knowledge exchange, which is instrumental in building enduring partnerships.

The spirit of collaboration shown in initiatives like this workshop offers hope for a more sustainable and resilient future for Fiji. As the country continues its modernization efforts of port infrastructure and maritime systems, it is well-positioned to tackle the challenges posed by climate change and ensure the wellbeing of its communities.
