The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources recently held an External Validation Workshop aimed at advancing the review of the State Lands Act 1945 and the Land Use Act 2010, a significant step toward enhancing land governance in Fiji. The event took place at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

During the workshop, Deputy Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, Timoci Samisoni, emphasized the critical role of stakeholder engagement in developing Fiji’s land-use framework for the future. He underscored that the diverse insights from participants would ensure that the legislative amendments are not only practical but also strategically aligned with national objectives and community necessities.

Samisoni pointed out that extensive consultations were conducted nationwide from late November of the previous year until last month, engaging various stakeholders including government agencies, development partners, civil society organizations, and leaseholders across all four Divisions of Fiji. This collaborative effort reflects a commitment to inclusivity in the legislative review process.

The review was executed in partnership with the Fiji Law Reform Commission, resulting in findings compiled by part-time Commissioners dedicated to the two Acts. The Ministry has expressed its agreement with the Commission’s recommendations, indicating a positive pathway forward.

The findings from this legislative review are poised to serve as the cornerstone for a robust legislative and policy framework that aligns more closely with national development goals. This approach aims to foster a more effective, transparent, and resilient land governance system, contributing to Fiji’s broader aspirations for sustainable development and community well-being. The proactive measures taken reflect a hopeful outlook for improved land management practices in the country.
