The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s squad has announced the addition of three talented players as they gear up for the highly anticipated Hong Kong 7s tournament. Isikeli Basiyalo and Aisea Nawai, both from the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua development squad, along with Apete Narogo from Semi Radradra’s Ubuntu team, have each received call-ups to join the national side.
Isikeli Basiyalo, a promising 21-year-old forward, was training with the Fijian Drua when he learned from head coach Glen Jackson that he was wanted in the Fiji 7s setup by head coach Osea Kolinisau. Basiyalo shared his joy and disbelief at the call-up, stating, “When I was called, I didn’t believe it at first, but I was actually happy and keen. I’ve always wanted to try sevens, so I’m glad to be here and learning a lot.”
In line with his commitment to team cohesion, Kolinisau has stressed that while the players from the Drua bring significant power and speed, their selection is contingent upon their fit within the team’s dynamics. “I’ve been in contact with Glen Jackson. He needed some boys to get game time. It’s not a guarantee; we’ll have a look at them and see if they fit in,” Kolinisau explained.
Apete Narogo, 23, earned his selection following outstanding performances that named him the best player at the Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s, drawing attention from national selectors due to his impressive skills on the field.
As these new players strive to secure their places in the final squad, the Fiji team is determined to make a notable impact at the upcoming tournament. Kolinisau’s methodical approach to player selection not only underscores the competitive environment but also highlights the ongoing dedication to cultivating emerging talent in Fijian rugby. This commitment promises a bright future for the team and has fans eagerly anticipating how these new athletes will contribute on the international stage. The chance for them to represent Fiji brings hope and excitement as they prepare for the challenge ahead.
