FICAC Stands Firm: Misunderstandings and Allegations Unraveled

Illustration of Investigations are conducted without bias: FICAC

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to conducting independent and fact-based investigations, emphasizing that all procedures are carried out free from bias or undue influence. This statement comes in response to recent comments by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu pertaining to an investigation involving former Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya.

According to FICAC, a complaint was received from the Supervisor of Elections on April 5, 2024, alleging Ms. Tabuya’s failure to disclose her spouse’s income and business interests as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. The investigation into these claims was initiated by former Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai on April 24, 2024. The findings revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Robert Semaan had been legally dissolved in December 2016.

FICAC concluded the investigation with a recommendation to close the file on August 5, 2024, and the formal closure was enacted by Puleiwai on August 12, 2024. The Supervisor of Elections was notified of this closure on September 20, 2024.

Furthermore, FICAC clarified that during the divorce proceedings, neither party was represented by current Commissioner Barbara Malimali, who was in private practice at that time. Seruiratu expressed concerns regarding Malimali’s involvement in the closure of the case, suggesting it may have been influenced by Tabuya. However, FICAC refuted this claim, stating that all actions related to the investigation were completed before Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner.

FICAC strongly rejected Seruiratu’s assertions, which they believe undermine the integrity of their operations. The Commission has encouraged the public, especially those in influential positions, to verify facts before making any public statements about its work.

This incident highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, and FICAC’s commitment to impartial investigations ensures the public can trust in the integrity of their political processes. With ongoing efforts to combat corruption, there is hope that such measures will foster a more transparent and trustworthy political environment in Fiji.
