The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for anticipated wet weather conditions over the next two days. Earlier today, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened with leaders from essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, and Fiji Meteorological Services, to finalize operational plans and ensure resources are in place to assist communities that may be affected.
The FRA has confirmed that the island’s connecting roads are currently clear and unaffected by the heavy rainfall experienced overnight. In addition, updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service have provided precise forecasts that allow stakeholders to enhance their preparedness strategies.
The Ministry of Education has been proactive in designating schools as potential evacuation centers if the situation requires it. Residents living in low-lying areas are encouraged to prepare by moving to higher ground during daylight hours to minimize risks, while nighttime movement should be avoided to prioritize safety.
Commissioner Rainima has also advised farmers to relocate their livestock to elevated areas and to take necessary actions to protect their livelihoods. He emphasized the importance of safety, urging the public to heed weather advisories, take early measures to prepare, and to contact local authorities if they require assistance or are uncertain about evacuation procedures.
“The safety of our community is our top priority,” Rainima stated. “We advise everyone to stay calm, listen to updates on the radio, and do not hesitate to reach out for help when needed.”
