The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging traders to refrain from exploiting the festive season for profit. Joel Abraham, the FCCC chief executive, emphasized that the commission will take stern measures against any trader involved in practices such as price gouging, dishonest promotions, or unfair conduct.

Abraham stated, “Let us work together to uphold fairness and ensure that the festive spirit is not marred by unethical practices.” Leading up to Christmas, the FCCC has been actively conducting inspections and surveys throughout the country. In November, the commission carried out over 700 inspections, focusing on preventing price manipulation and deceptive trade practices. This effort resulted in identifying 44 potential violations, including instances of overcharging and failing to display prices correctly or reflect tax reductions in the pricing of goods and services.

The FCCC plans to respond to the identified breaches with appropriate enforcement actions, which could range from issuing warning letters to placing businesses under surveillance or pursuing prosecution when necessary. So far this month, the FCCC has conducted 417 pre-Christmas inspections to ensure compliance among traders and protect consumers during the busy holiday shopping period.

In addition to the enforcement message, Abraham highlighted the importance of kindness and community spirit during this festive season. He encouraged everyone to check on those who may be vulnerable in their neighborhoods, be it an elderly neighbor, a family member, or someone spending the holidays alone. Simple acts of kindness, such as sharing a meal or providing companionship, can greatly impact those who are less fortunate.

This proactive approach from the FCCC not only aims to protect consumers from unfair practices but also promotes the essence of community and support during the holiday season. It serves as a reminder that the true spirit of the holidays involves caring for one another, creating a more compassionate society.

In summary, the FCCC is committed to maintaining fair practices among traders during the festive season while also advocating for kindness within the community. The organization’s vigilance and community spirit promise a season filled with both fairness and goodwill.
