Farming Forward: How Tanya Yahuwah is Breaking Barriers in Agriculture

Farming Her Future: How Tanya Yahuwah is Transforming Agriculture for Women

Tanya Yahuwah from Kadavu is thriving in her farming career, a decision she embraces without regrets. Her venture into agriculture has provided a reliable income, especially during challenging financial times. Recently, she showcased her achievements at the National Women in Agriculture Expo 2025 held in Suva, highlighting the vital role women can play in this traditionally male-dominated sector.

Tanya and her husband made a life-changing choice to return to their village after years in the British Army, focusing their energies on orchard farming. Their dedication is evident as they’ve partnered with the research division of the agriculture station in Sigatoka, recently acquiring 150 lime seedlings to promote a diverse fruit crop and sustainable livelihoods.

Motivated by farming techniques she observed abroad, Tanya and her husband prioritized fruit orchards over root crops, recognizing the long-term benefits of fruit trees. “Unlike root crops and vegetables, for fruit trees and plants, you just plant once and harvest over a lifetime,” she noted, which has attracted interest and support from agricultural officers in her region.

Family support has been crucial to Tanya’s journey. Inspired by her son to cultivate seeds from foreign fruits he enjoyed, she underscores the importance of having a partner who shares the same goals and mindset, saying, “To withstand the obstacles that life throws at you, you need to have a supportive partner.”

Tanya’s experience resonates with stories of resilience among other female entrepreneurs like Olivia Cavuka, who faced significant challenges yet continued to thrive in agriculture. Both women represent a wave of resilience, encouraging others to pursue their ambitions while balancing family responsibilities.

Tanya’s journey reflects hope and potential within the agricultural realm, advocating for increased recognition of women’s contributions to food security and economic stability within their communities. Their experiences mark a transformative shift toward empowering women in various industries, promising a brighter future for generations to come.
