Ex-Policeman Sentenced for Fatal Assault: A Tragic Night Unfolds

A former police officer, Fifita Toma Tawake, has been sentenced to four years and 11 months in prison after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of an intoxicated man. The sentencing took place on Friday before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe in the Suva High Court.

The incident occurred on January 13, when Tawake, while under the influence of alcohol, punched a man who had lightly tapped the back of his car as they were proceeding through a red light in Suva. The court learned that Tawake showed a complete lack of regard for the victim, who was left unconscious on the ground. Justice Rajasinghe criticized Tawake for his actions, particularly for dragging the victim to a nearby corner and leaving him exposed to the rain.

Although Tawake is a first-time offender and expressed remorse, pleading guilty on the trial’s first day, the severity of the incident warranted a significant sentence. His prison term includes a non-parole period of two years and 11 months.

This case serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being in a position of authority and the need for accountability in the face of actions that lead to tragic outcomes. There is hope that Tawake’s remorse and acceptance of responsibility can lead to personal rehabilitation and a commitment to better behavior in the future.

By addressing such issues, the community can foster a safer environment and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
