Eviction Deadline Looms: Minister Seeks Extension for Kilikali Residents

The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has requested an extension for the eviction deadline for residents at Kilikali settlement in Nasinu, where 60 households are facing removal by May 30. This request came after discussions between Ministry officials and the RB Patel Group Limited, which owns the land, suggesting a commitment to explore alternative solutions for the affected families.

A recent socio-economic survey conducted by the Ministry assessed 61 of the 69 households in the settlement, with the findings forthcoming to the landowning group. Minister Nalumisa expressed concerns for the residents, many of whom have lived in Kilikali for years and now face uncertainty about their future housing. Some families are considering returning to their ancestral villages, while others are seeking options from nearby iTaukei landowners for potential relocation.

The eviction notice was issued by Sherani & Co. Solicitors, marking the residents’ occupation as “unlawful and illegal.” This has raised significant worry among families about where they will go next, emphasizing the emotional toll of potential displacement, particularly on the younger generations.

Amid this distressing situation, the Ministry has encouraged residents to maintain open communication with them for any inquiries or concerns. They have pledged to ensure that any relocations will be conducted with “dignity, security, and support,” highlighting a commitment to not just remove residents but to assist them in navigating this challenging transition.

This scenario is reminiscent of similar situations faced by other communities in Fiji, like those in the Nabua Muslim League Settlement, where families have also experienced abrupt eviction notices, leading to widespread anxiety. However, it is hopeful that the government’s proactive approach and willingness to engage with the affected communities might lead to compassionate and constructive solutions that prioritize the welfare of these vulnerable populations.

As the situation progresses, updates from the Ministry are expected, reinforcing a hope for a smoother and more supportive path forward for the residents struggling with uncertainty over their future.
