The Israeli military reported on Thursday that it has launched airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in the southern suburbs of Beirut, with three strikes confirmed by the Lebanese state news agency. This marks the first significant attack on Hezbollah’s stronghold in over a month. Eyewitness footage showed smoke rising from the area, indicating the intensity of the strikes.
Prior to the airstrikes, the Israeli army issued evacuation warnings to residents in four neighborhoods known as Dahiyeh, where it claimed to be targeting underground drone-manufacturing facilities associated with Hezbollah and financed by Iran. Thousands of residents are reported to have fled, leading to severe traffic congestion in the area, which has already been heavily impacted by a year-long conflict that saw a ceasefire established last November.
The attacks were particularly controversial as they coincided with the commencement of the Muslim holiday Eid Al-Adha. The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon expressed concern that these strikes “generated renewed panic and fear” just before a significant religious observance. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun criticized the military actions as a blatant violation of international agreements, particularly troubling on the eve of a sacred occasion.
Hezbollah and Israel have long accused one another of failing to uphold the ceasefire terms established after last year’s war. Tensions have escalated recently, and this latest military engagement adds to a history of aggressions where Israel has inflicted heavy losses on Hezbollah, including significant casualties among its fighters and leaders.
In a related context, the Israeli military also cautioned additional communities in southern Lebanon to evacuate as part of its broader efforts against Hezbollah. As this situation unfolds, it is vital to emphasize the importance of discussions around peace and stability in the region, aiming for a return to a more peaceful coexistence. The involvement of international actors may be necessary to navigate these complex tensions and to foster the hope of long-term solutions that would benefit both Lebanese and Israeli communities.
