William Koi, an 18-year-old student from Kalabu Secondary School, is garnering attention at the Suva Zone One Athletics competition. In an inspiring act of entrepreneurship, Koi sold ‘achar’ (pickled mangoes) to raise funds for a pair of track shoes necessary for his training. His determination and entrepreneurial spirit led to a triumphant first-place finish in the senior boys’ 100 meters event.
Koi shared his motivation behind this endeavor, saying, “I didn’t have a track shoe, and I didn’t want to ask my family to buy it because it is expensive. So I decided to sell something and save enough money to buy it.” This initiative not only highlights his responsibility but also underscores a strong work ethic, qualities essential for success in athletics.
As the finals for the 100 and 200 meters loom, Koi looks forward to facing tough competition and encourages his fellow athletes to come prepared. His story is part of a larger trend in Fijian athletics, where young athletes are increasingly displaying resilience and entrepreneurial skills.
The Suva Zone One Athletics competition is currently being broadcast live on FBC Sports, showcasing the talents of emerging athletes like Koi. Their achievements not only signify personal victories but also cultivate a sense of community and sportsmanship among schools and participants.
This event marks a positive development in youth athletics in Fiji, paving the way for future sports stars and inspiring others with their dedication and achievements. It reflects the hope and potential of the country’s young athletes, resonating with a message of perseverance and community spirit.
