Empowering Women with Disabilities: A New Strategy for Resilience in the Pacific Islands

A new comprehensive 10-year Pacific Disability Inclusive Resilience Development Strategy has been officially launched, emphasizing the need to blend disability and gender inclusion with financial resilience. This initiative aims to create opportunities specifically tailored for women with disabilities, particularly in the context of disaster risk management and climate change across the Pacific Islands.

Emelini Ilolahia, the Executive Director of the Pacific Islands Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (PIANGO), articulated the strategy’s goal to foster long-term resilience and independence for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to thrive even in times of crisis. Ilolahia underscored the critical aspect of expanding access to education and employment opportunities, which will lend support to local partners engaged in these communities.

Sainimili Tawake, CEO of the Pacific Disability Forum, emphasized the importance of advocating for inclusive banking, social protection, and government support to create pathways toward financial security for women with disabilities. Tawake noted that achieving resilience also entails recognizing financial independence as a fundamental right.

Additionally, Ilolahia expressed concerns regarding the process of securing funding for local communities. Despite attempts to channel resources effectively, she pointed out that protocols often hinder direct access to essential financial support.

The strategy was introduced in conjunction with International Women’s Day, reinforcing the notion that resilience planning must be inclusive, addressing the needs of those most affected by climate change and natural disasters. This collaborative initiative builds upon discussions from previous events aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities, emphasizing community involvement and sustainable partnerships.

The current strategy echoes sentiments shared at a recent regional conference, where institutions and advocates united to develop inclusive frameworks for disaster response and resilience. The Pacific Disability Forum, in collaboration with UN Women, aims not only to establish practical responses but also to create a movement towards creating equitable environments for all individuals, thereby ensuring no one is left behind during crisis situations.

As these initiatives unfold, there remains a hopeful outlook that through collective efforts, the message of inclusivity and resilience will resonate throughout the Pacific Islands, fostering a more empowered and equal society for all.
