Empowering Women: The Heart of Fiji’s Economic Future

Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran recently recognized the pivotal role of women in society, calling them the backbone and driving force behind sustainable economic growth. Speaking at the 7th National Women’s Expo held in Suva, Kiran highlighted that the resilience, creativity, and determination of women have significantly advanced various sectors, including entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology, and handicrafts.

“You are not only here just for economic empowerment or to share your trade; you bring the beautiful traditions and gifts from our ancestors and continue to pass them on to future generations,” Kiran expressed, emphasizing the expo’s theme, “Fijian Women at the Heart of Economic Progress.”

Kiran reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting women through essential resources and policies to ensure they are at the forefront of economic development. She encouraged participants to seize opportunities for learning, growth, and inspiration.

The First Lady of Fiji, Emily Lalabalavu, also addressed the attendees, praising the expo’s theme as fitting. She underscored that this initiative aims to ensure access to equal opportunities, rights, and resources for women across all communities. Lalabalavu stated, “This expo is a means of connecting women to both domestic and global markets, supporting their livelihoods and the well-being of their families and communities.”

Reflecting on the systemic challenges women face, like social norms and health issues, she stressed the need for effective policies to overcome these barriers and promote inclusive economic empowerment. Both Kiran and Lalabalavu’s messages resonated with over 300 women who showcased their crafts, underlining women’s significant contributions to local economies.

Past events have demonstrated how women’s participation in entrepreneurship contributes to community growth, fostering resilience and independence. This year’s expo further reinforces this vision, aiming for a hopeful future where women are empowered and celebrated, thus crafting brighter prospects for generations to come.

The National Women’s Expo serves not only as a platform for showcasing talent but also reinforces the belief that when women thrive, entire communities benefit. With ongoing support and opportunities, there’s a strong possibility for positive advancements in women’s rights and empowerment in Fiji.
