Women play a crucial role in Fiji’s small business sector, especially within market vending, where their contributions significantly bolster the economy. However, despite their essential involvement, many women encounter significant challenges, including restricted access to resources, unsafe working environments, and instances of gender-based violence.
At a recent event in Nadi honoring these contributions, Border Police Airport Inspector Apikale Bari underscored the importance of ensuring safe working conditions and fair wages for women. She called on local governments and businesses to collaborate in protecting women from exploitation, highlighting that they are often the backbone of Fiji’s commerce. Bari remarked, “Women have always been the backbone of trade and commerce… yet many face challenges such as limited access to capital and gender discrimination.”
Ilisapeci Maria, a Counselor Advocate from the Women Crisis Center, further emphasized that while women receive recognition on International Women’s Day, the struggle for safety, dignity, and empowerment continues every day. She described the pressures faced by women, who juggle household responsibilities and the expectation of financial contributions, often facing violence if they do not meet these expectations.
Maria advocates for ongoing acknowledgment and empowerment beyond just one celebratory day. She suggests the implementation of mentorship programs, skill development workshops, and networking opportunities to equip women with the knowledge and confidence needed to grow their businesses and tackle the adversities they encounter.
This dialogue around women’s empowerment aligns with broader discussions on gender equality, echoing efforts made by leaders to promote initiatives that support women economically. Government initiatives highlight that investing in women not only drives social advancement but also fuels productivity and fosters overall economic growth in the region.
Fiji’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment initiatives brings a hopeful outlook for the future, as strides continue toward creating more inclusive and equitable opportunities for all women. The overall progress indicates a step forward in recognizing and addressing the challenges faced by women, paving the way for a stronger economy fueled by their active participation.
