The Waibau Women’s Club, established in 2019 and officially registered with the Ministry of Women, continues to thrive as a community-focused organization aimed at uplifting women and girls in Waibau. Under the leadership of Makereta Nofoimuli, the club encourages sustainable agricultural practices among its members, enabling them to cultivate their leased lands effectively.
Currently, the club consists of 11 members who work collaboratively across six plots of land. They are committed to enhancing their households’ livelihoods by growing various crops. The members actively utilize their land in Naqaraivi, Waibau, to grow nutritious vegetables and root crops, which not only nourishes their families but also has the potential for economic benefit.
The women report positive results from their agricultural activities, stating that, “We have plenty of land; if we manage it well, we can provide food for our families.” They are successfully cultivating crops such as taro, cassava, sweet potatoes, and ginger. Additionally, they have set a goal to cultivate more yaqona in the coming years.
The club members also maintain an appreciation for the Ministry of Forestry’s support, which has been instrumental in their agricultural endeavors. They work diligently every Monday, even organizing house blessings to foster unity and support within their community.
Recognizing the changing weather conditions poses challenges for their crop yields, the women remain determined to persist in improving their circumstances. They advise other women to take charge and work diligently, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and shared efforts within their organization to achieve substantial successes.
