Empowering Communities: $228,000 Grant to Transform Rural Living Conditions

The Minister for Multiethnic Affairs has announced the disbursement of $228,000 in the latest round of funding through the Multi-ethnic Grant Program. This financial assistance is particularly aimed at improving the living conditions in various communities, especially those in rural areas where access to government services is limited.

The funds are set to benefit seven communities—six in the Central Division and one in the Eastern Division. The Ministry emphasizes that this program is not just about providing financial support; it also aims to foster cooperation and unity among community members as they work towards common goals. The communities are planning to use the grant to enhance local infrastructure by installing solar street lights, repairing buildings, and renovating cemeteries.

Community leaders have expressed the significance of these grants. Ranjana Kumar, President of the Nukumoto Women’s Club, highlighted that the funding will enhance safety for young girls returning home at night, as their area currently lacks street lighting. Likewise, Naresh Chandra, President of the Tokotoka Mandali, mentioned that the funds will assist community members during weddings and funerals, while Ditendra Kumar from Levuka pointed out that part of the grant will be allocated to repairing a cemetery previously damaged by Cyclone Winston.

This initiative follows an earlier round of funding in which the Ministry allocated $1.48 million to various communities. The Ministry is currently seeking increased funding in the next government budget to expand support to even more communities in the upcoming financial year.

The overarching goal of these grant programs is to empower diverse communities across Fiji, enhancing their self-sufficiency and fostering inclusivity within society. As the government continues to invest in community development, there is hope for a more cohesive future where all members can thrive and contribute positively to their neighborhoods.

By supporting local initiatives through such funding, the government is demonstrating a strong commitment to uplifting minority groups and promoting a more interconnected and harmonious society, echoing sentiments from past funding efforts. This proactive approach lays the groundwork for lasting improvements in community infrastructure and social cohesion.
