The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has issued a strong warning to schools that refuse to enroll students, emphasizing the fundamental right of every child to receive an education. During a speech in Labasa, he highlighted the obligation of educational institutions to prioritize student enrollment for the current academic year.
Radrodro addressed reports from parents who have encountered refusals from schools, urging those affected to reach out to their local District Education Offices for assistance. While acknowledging that schools may have their reasons for denying enrollment, he reminded them of the principles established in the 2023 Denarau Declaration, which stresses the importance of inclusive and equitable education.
He asserted that factors such as academic performance should not be the only basis for admission, warning that any actions taken to hinder access to education contradict the government’s objectives. The minister assured that those responsible for such actions would be held accountable by the Ministry of Education, specifically under his supervision.
In addition to addressing enrollment issues, Radrodro outlined several key educational priorities for 2025, with a particular focus on retaining teachers to maintain the quality of education. He acknowledged infrastructure challenges, specifically the need for adequate electricity and water supply in some schools, and mentioned ongoing efforts to explore renewable energy solutions, such as solar power, while collaborating with other ministries to tackle water shortages.
The Ministry of Education is dedicated to providing schools with the necessary resources and support to ensure that every child has access to quality education. This commitment reflects a hopeful vision for the future of education, focusing on inclusivity and the continual improvement of school facilities, ultimately benefiting students across the region.
