The Capital Insurance Dreketi Rugby Club celebrated a remarkable victory at the Rewa Rugby Union 10s tournament held at Lokia Sports Ground in Nausori over the weekend. The Dreketi team triumphed against Kuku, securing a $1,000 cash prize, while the runners-up left with $500.
Manager Jone Ravai expressed the team’s excitement about their win, indicating that they have a solid foundation for future competitions. Ravai acknowledged that while this victory is encouraging, there are still areas that need improvement as they prepare to transition into the 15s code next month. “This is a good start for us. We celebrate our victory here, but we recognize the need for growth before the full 15s season begins,” he stated.
The event, which closed registrations on November 24 for a fee of $300, was open to all affiliated clubs and local teams. Initially, the prize money was set at $600 for the winners and $400 for runners-up; however, this amount was increased to provide a more substantial reward for the participating teams.
This tournament marks the first event of the Rewa Rugby Union’s calendar, signifying a promising year ahead for the sport in the region. The Union urged players, coaches, and supporters to embrace the upcoming season. Their message emphasized the importance of building on their legacy, promoting sportsmanship, and striving for excellence both on and off the field.
The enthusiasm and commitment seen in this tournament highlight the community’s vibrant rugby culture and sets an optimistic tone for the future of Rewa rugby. As the Dreketi team prepares for the 15s season, their dedication and focus will be instrumental in facing the challenges ahead.
