Last month, two young girls under the age of ten were reportedly involved in separate incidents of sexual offenses. According to police reports, one case involved a four-year-old girl who was allegedly indecently assaulted by a 19-year-old male. In another disturbing incident, a 17-year-old male is accused of raping and indecently assaulting his ten-year-old sister. These events reportedly took place in 2022 but were only reported in early 2025.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu highlighted this alarming trend as he shared overall crime statistics for the previous month, noting a nine percent increase in crimes against children. Specifically, 92 sexual offense cases were reported in January 2025, a slight decrease from 100 cases during the same period the previous year. Tudravu pointed out that 60 percent of the victims in these cases were under the age of 18, with a concerning statistic that females accounted for 93 percent of reported victims while males represented seven percent.
In January alone, the Fiji Police Force documented 29 cases of rape, 23 cases of indecent assault, and 15 cases of sexual assault. Tudravu emphasized the need for community support and awareness in addressing the troubling rise in these offenses, particularly those affecting minors. The ongoing dialogue about these issues could play a significant role in fostering a safer environment for children and victims of such crimes.
These statistics, while disheartening, stress the importance of continued advocacy, support services, and community awareness initiatives aimed at preventing further abuse and ensuring safety for vulnerable populations. It is essential for society to come together to address the underlying issues leading to such distressing incidents.
