The World Food Programme has reported alarming scenes in Gaza, where large crowds have rushed to aid trucks as desperation and hunger escalate among civilians. Recently, 77 trucks carrying flour were delivered, but the distribution faced significant challenges. According to a spokesperson for the WFP, all trucks were intercepted en route, as desperate individuals sought to provide food for their families.
In light of the chaos, the WFP decided to allow civilians to take aid directly from the convoys, reflecting the dire need for resources. Since the easing of an 11-week blockade on May 19, the amount of aid entering Gaza has been severely inadequate, only fulfilling just over 10% of the population’s urgent needs, as per United Nations estimates.
This situation is further complicated by previous reports indicating a dire humanitarian crisis, where local officials highlighted the inability to reach essential distributions. It has been estimated that around 500 trucks per day are required to alleviate food shortages affecting Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people.
