Police are currently investigating a suspected hit-and-run incident along the Seaqaqa–Labasa Highway near Wailevu, where a man’s body was discovered early Sunday morning. The tragic scene was first encountered by a truck driver around 5 a.m., who found two government vehicles already present. After staying at the scene at the request of the drivers, the truck driver contacted his wife, who subsequently alerted the police.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers confirmed that the victim had visible injuries, believed to be from a vehicular collision. The man was transported to Labasa Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators have launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This incident follows a concerning pattern of similar events, including a recent spike in hit-and-run cases within the Southern Division, where community safety and vigilance are paramount. Police officials, including Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, have previously highlighted the rising number of road fatalities and the importance of public cooperation in such investigations.

With the community’s support and ongoing efforts by law enforcement, there is hope that justice will be served for victims’ families, and steps can be taken to enhance road safety for all. It is crucial for drivers to be mindful of their surroundings, especially in areas where pedestrians may be at risk. These tragic occurrences serve as important reminders of the necessity for caution on the roadways.
