Tropical Cyclone Rae has caused extensive damage to the Cicia crossway, rendering it 80 percent unusable. Provincial Administrator Lau Iokobo Waqanidrola confirmed the urgent need for repairs due to the cyclone’s impact on accessibility for other communities and vessels. A post-cyclone relief and assessment team is currently deployed in the Lau Group, working on damage assessments and providing ration distribution.
Waqanidrola has stated, “So far, only one major damage that we received from Cicia, the Cicia crossway, the jetty… Our plan for now we’ll take the Vunilagi to cut the machine from Vanuabalabu to Cicia to fix the crossway.” The efficient coordination among teams demonstrates improvement in communication and response strategies compared to previous cyclones, enhancing the effectiveness of post-disaster assessments.
Residents, including Namuka-i-Lau Turaga ni Koro Ledua Waqabula, recounted a harrowing experience during TC Rae, enduring nearly 10 hours of strong winds and heavy rainfall. Fortunately, the aftermath revealed limited devastation, with only two houses reported as completely destroyed and several others sustaining roof damage.
Relief operations involve various agencies, including the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Red Cross, who are committed to staying in the Lau Group for three weeks to assist with recovery efforts. These initiatives highlight the resilience of the Fijian people in facing natural disasters, as community solidarity plays a crucial role in recovery.
The collaborative spirit witnessed during this crisis not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters a sense of hope, showcasing the community’s strength in overcoming adversity and rebuilding for the future. The responsiveness of both local authorities and residents illustrates an unwavering commitment to restoring normalcy and safety in the wake of such challenging events.
