Cricket Fiji has enlisted the expertise of Australian high-performance coach Sanjiv Dubey to conduct a short-term training camp for the national Under-19 team. This initiative aims to prepare the young athletes for the East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers scheduled to take place in Japan this April.
The training camp, which commenced on January 8 at Albert Park in Suva and will run until January 25, focuses on comprehensive skill development supported by local coaches. In an interview, Dubey underscored the importance of a holistic approach to enhancing not just the players’ individual performances, but also elevating Cricket Fiji’s profile on the international cricket stage. “We need to invest time and effort into our development if we want to advance beyond just participating in tournaments,” he stated.
This marks Dubey’s third year working with Cricket Fiji, during which he has found the experience rewarding. He praised the players’ humility and eagerness to learn, stating that the energy gained from working with such promising young individuals is incredibly motivating. Dubey’s goal is to help the players refine their core skills and ultimately perform like professionals during international competitions. “It’s a slow and long process, but if we follow that then we’ll achieve our goals,” he explained.
Notably, the training camp is inclusive and extends an invitation to interested female players currently participating in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League. This commitment to diversity within cricket reflects a positive development in the sport, providing opportunities for both male and female players to grow together.
In summary, the training camp not only serves to enhance the Under-19 team’s preparation for the upcoming tournament but also underscores Cricket Fiji’s commitment to nurturing young talent. With a strong focus on skill development and inclusivity, this initiative promises to instill hope for the future of cricket in Fiji, paving the way for improved prospects on the international scene.
