“Controversy Erupts Over Nurse Practitioner Appointment in Fiji”

Opposition MP Jone Usamate has voiced strong criticism regarding the appointment of Vakaloloma Mocevakaca Nakarawa as the Nurse Practitioner for the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS). Usamate argues that this decision undermines the professionalism and standards expected in the provision of quality services to the public. He elaborated on the significant differences between the roles of a nurse practitioner and a medical officer, emphasizing that the qualifications and scope of practice for each position must be respected and that appointing a nurse practitioner in this capacity could set a dangerous precedent.

During his statements to the media, Usamate addressed concerns raised by Justice Minister Siromi Turaga, who had also expressed regret over the lack of proper advice regarding Nakarawa’s appointment as mandated by the Constitution of Fiji. Turaga had noted that the FCS Commissioner holds significant power over appointments and that the necessary terms and conditions need to be endorsed by the Minister.

The controversy surrounding Nakarawa’s appointment has intensified due to allegations of nepotism, as her position coincided with the dismissal of a senior medical officer, leading to critical scrutiny over the recruitment process within the FCS. Dr. Alisi Vudiniabola, president of the Fiji Nursing Association, reiterated this concern, indicating that the qualifications for nurse practitioners and medical officers are distinctly different and should not overlap in formal appointments.

Usamate asserted the urgency for a thorough investigation into the appointment process, calling for accountability and remedial actions to restore trust in the government’s commitment to good governance. He remarked, “Governance must always prioritize serving the people and not any other interests.” This incident represents an important moment for reforms within the FCS, emphasizing the need for transparency and merit-based appointments in public roles. With ongoing discussions about governance and accountability, there is potential for positive change that reinforces integrity within Fiji’s public institutions, beneficial for the community’s trust and well-being.
