Residents of Nawaka in Nadi are mourning the loss of the late Minister for Agriculture, Vatimi Rayalu, who passed away recently at the age of 57 following a brief illness. The sentiments of grief have been echoed by local leaders, including Turaga ni Koro Mosese Runakuru, who noted Rayalu’s consistent support and guidance during his visits to the Western Division.
Runakuru highlighted Rayalu’s encouragement for the community to maximize their land use and explore cooperative ventures. Under Rayalu’s leadership, the village saw increased technological support for its two existing cooperatives, which have played a crucial role in local agricultural development. “We are grateful that a minister like Rayalu was appointed to the role of Minister for Agriculture. Our goal was achieved. The Vanua o Nawaka deeply mourns his passing,” Runakuru expressed.
The community plans to partake in traditional mourning ceremonies, known as ireguregu, set to take place in Suva as they honor his memory. Tui Nawaka, Ratu Joweli Bulu, emphasized that Rayalu’s efforts during his tenure had a significant positive impact, particularly in promoting greater investment in land development, which benefited the people of Nawaka and beyond.
Rayalu is remembered not just as a public servant, but also as a figure who inspired many through his dedication to the agricultural sector. His legacy encourages others to pursue the values of community commitment and sustainable farming practices that he exemplified. As the community reflects on his contributions, there is a hopeful outlook that his principles of service will continue to guide future leaders in enhancing the agricultural landscape of Fiji.
