Coalition Crisis Averted? Kamikamica Stands By Rabuka

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has expressed unwavering support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka amidst rising tensions within their coalition government, particularly with the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA). In a recent interview, Kamikamica dismissed speculation about a potential split from Rabuka, affirming that the Prime Minister remains firmly in control and backed by the People’s Alliance.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated, “There’s no split from the Prime Minister,” emphasizing that Rabuka’s leadership is respected by all coalition members. As concerns about the coalition’s stability have surfaced due to controversial remarks made by SODELPA’s general secretary, Viliame Takayawa, Kamikamica indicated that further discussions to address these issues would take place soon. He highlighted the coalition’s primary duty: serving the Fijian people, and not letting internal disputes distract from their responsibilities.

These tensions were reportedly ignited by Takayawa’s critical comments regarding a recent Fiji trade mission to Tonga, suggesting that members of the delegation failed to adequately engage with the Fijian diaspora, focusing instead on leisure. Following these remarks, there have been internal meetings and public scrutiny, prompting Kamikamica to call for unity within the coalition. He noted that decisions made by Prime Minister Rabuka would be upheld, reflecting a commitment to maintaining the coalition’s integrity.

The ongoing debates within the coalition come at a crucial time, as the ability to maintain a stable government is essential for addressing long-standing issues facing Fiji. With the Prime Minister currently evaluating the coalition arrangements and possibility of reforms, there is potential for effective communication among coalition members to lead to constructive changes that could enhance governance and stability.

In previous reports, Rabuka has indicated that he is open to reconciliation, which highlights the importance of unity within the coalition. As the situation unfolds, there lies a hopeful outlook that enhanced collaboration can help resolve internal conflicts, reinforcing the coalition’s commitment to serving the Fijian populace and pursuing reforms that benefit the country.
