Chiefs Defeat Drua 42-22 in Christchurch as Errors Cost Fijian Side; Debutant Maika Tuitubou Shines

Errors and costly moments proved the difference as the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua were beaten 22-42 by the Chiefs in their Super Round Super Rugby Pacific fixture at One NZ Stadium in Christchurch on Friday night. The loss exposed lapses in consistency that co-captain Temo Mayanavanua said the side must fix as they return to Fiji and prepare for a home clash this weekend.

“We weren’t consistent enough,” Mayanavanua said in a post-match interview. “We started off well, but there are a couple of areas that we could be better on.” The match swung decisively after a pivotal error from fullback Ilaisa Droasese, whose attempted in-goal grubber failed to clear the danger and allowed Chiefs wing Jared Profitt to touch down, a score that caught many at the stadium and viewers in Fiji by surprise.

Chiefs captain Tupou Vaa’i and his teammates capitalised on that opening, finding space and momentum to extend their advantage before the break. Despite the halftime deficit, Mayanavanua praised the Drua bench for their second-half contribution, saying impact players who came off the pine helped the team close the gap on the scoreboard, even if it was not enough to overturn the result.

A notable positive from the night was the Super Rugby debut of Maika Tuitubou. Initially named in the starting XV, Tuitubou “featured prominently,” according to Mayanavanua, and was singled out for praise. “I thought our debutant Maika (Tuitubou) was unreal today,” Mayanavanua said, adding that the squad were “gutted” they could not get a win to mark his first outing.

The defeat leaves the Drua needing to recover quickly in a compact Super Rugby schedule. The team will return to Fiji to prepare for a 4pm Saturday showdown with the Highlanders at Four R Stadium, Govind Park in Ba. Mayanavanua stressed the importance of sticking together and refocusing on that next match as the season progresses.

The match underlined both strengths and areas for improvement for the Drua: moments of promising play and fightback from the bench, but also costly errors under pressure that the Chiefs punished ruthlessly. With limited turnaround time before the Highlanders fixture, the Drua coaching staff and players will have little time to work through the inconsistencies highlighted in Christchurch.
