A surge of aspiring players at the Central/Eastern Netball Fiji trials in Suva has deepened the national coach’s selection headache, with about 190 athletes taking part across the phases at the USP Gym this week. The turnout — the final of three regional trial rounds following the West and North sessions — has underlined both the growing depth of talent across Fiji and the intensifying competition for places in the Fiji Pearls set-up.
Head coach Michelle Parsons said the numbers alone were encouraging but it was the intensity on court that impressed her most. “There was no quarter given,” Parsons said, noting that trialists pushed one another hard even when they were friends off the court. That blend of fierce competitiveness and mutual respect, she added, is exactly what the national programme needs to lift standards.
What stands out as the latest development in this selection cycle is the stronger presence from Western and Northern districts — regions that have traditionally played second fiddle to the Central and Eastern talent pools. Parsons highlighted the athleticism coming out of those areas, saying players from the West and North “impressed with their speed and agility,” and that the wider geographic spread bodes well for Netball Fiji’s development pathways and high-performance plans.
The trials also provided a platform for younger and less experienced players to test themselves against senior and former Fiji Pearls stars invited to participate. Parsons said many trialists actively sought that challenge, effectively asking to be measured against established internationals. “They were essentially saying, ‘measure me against them,’” she said, adding that the willingness to compete against seasoned players gave selectors additional insight into temperament and readiness for higher levels.
With a mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talent pushing each other across the three regional events, Parsons indicated a sizable cohort will be invited to the next stage — national trials where final squad decisions will be made. “We’re building from the ground up,” she said, confirming expectations that “there’s going to be a large group progressing to the national trials” as Netball Fiji looks to refine its pool ahead of upcoming international windows.
The latest round of trials signals a competitive selection environment for the Pearls, one that could reshape the composition of future squads as selectors balance experience with fresh athletic profiles from across Fiji. For now, Parsons and her coaching staff face the task of narrowing a deep field that has made the pathway to national selection more contested than in recent years.
