Ba cling to slim lead after 1-1 draw with Lautoka as Rewa close in with 4-1 win

Ba Football Club clung to a precarious lead at the top of the Extra Premier League after being held to a 1-1 draw by Lautoka, leaving the Rooster Chicken side on 14 points — just one ahead of Rewa, who moved to 13 following a convincing win at Ratu Cakobau Park. The result, played out with two red cards and late drama, leaves the title race tighter than before.

Ba struck first when Vilitati Kautoga fired the visitors ahead in the first half, setting up what looked to be a promising night for the league leaders. The contest then simmered into controversy when Ba striker Etonia Dogalau was shown a straight red for a dangerous challenge on Lautoka forward Simione Nabenu, reducing Ba to 10 men. Lautoka pushed to capitalise on the numerical advantage, but the match’s balance shifted again after Nabenu received his own red card later for dangerous play, leaving both sides to finish with ten players.

With both teams depleted, Lautoka continued to press and eventually found a way back on level terms when Rusiate Matererega rose to head home the equaliser, salvaging a point for the Blues. The draw maintains Ba’s slender cushion atop the standings but does little to quieten the growing chorus of challengers.

Rewa kept the pressure on the leaders with a dominant 4-1 victory over Nadi at Ratu Cakobau Park. Norman Ngafu grabbed a brace to spearhead the win, while Sitiveni Rakai and Semi Matawalu also found the net to complete the scoring. The result edged Rewa to within a point of Ba and underscored their credentials as serious title contenders.

Suva produced the weekend’s most eye-catching scoreline, an 8-0 rout of Tailevu Naitasiri highlighted by a hat-trick from Siotame Kubu. The result propelled Suva up the table into third place and served notice that they can be a force in the run of fixtures ahead if they sustain that form.

There were further shifts down the table as Nasinu eked out a 2-1 win over Nadroga, and Labasa ran out 5-2 winners against Navua in Saturday’s clash. Those outcomes add layers to the mid-table battle for position and could influence the dynamics of the title race as clubs jostle for momentum.

This latest round carries added significance for Ba beyond the point gained; Etonia Dogalau’s dismissal follows his recent contributions to the team and raises questions about the club’s discipline and availability for coming fixtures. With Rewa closing in and Suva surging, the top of the Extra Premier League looks increasingly congested heading into the next matchweek.
