BAT Fiji Drives Towards a Greener Future with $1.2M Eco-Initiative

British American Tobacco (BAT Fiji) is making strides in sustainability with its latest investment in eco-friendly technologies. The company has acquired seven new Torres electric vehicles (EVs) in a move projected to reduce its annual carbon footprint by 25 tonnes. This significant $0.7 million investment includes an additional $0.1 million dedicated to the installation of two 60 kW fast chargers at its Nabua and Votualevu sites.

General Manager Sam Dormor emphasized BAT Fiji’s dedication to sustainability, stating a clear ambition to achieve a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and to operate on 50% renewable energy by 2030. This initiative aligns with the company’s broader Sustainability Agenda.

In further efforts to enhance its green credentials, BAT Fiji recently invested $1.2 million in solar panel installations at its Nabua and Nadi facilities. The company has also achieved Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) certifications for these locations, which assist in managing water resources responsibly and building ties with local water stakeholders.

Moreover, BAT Fiji has initiated a Zero Waste to Landfill program, successfully diverting all waste from landfills as of 2024. Following last year’s launch of the GreenEn Project, the company has transitioned to using wood fuel for its leaf barns, reducing fossil fuel dependence. This initiative not only promotes sustainability but also includes a commitment to reforest six hectares in the Nausori Highlands by planting 2,600 mahogany and pine saplings.

The Torres EVX, a mid-size electric SUV produced by KGM, brings an efficient green alternative with a WLTP range of up to 462 km on a single charge, indicating a promising step toward reducing emissions and promoting renewable energy within the transportation sector.

In conclusion, BAT Fiji’s multifaceted approach to sustainability reflects a significant corporate responsibility commitment, showcasing innovation in operations while contributing to environmental conservation. Their forward-thinking strategies not only benefit the company but also set a precedent for other businesses in the region to follow suit.
