The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has officially moved the assault case against a 21-year-old police officer, Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto, to the High Court in Suva. Colamoto is facing a charge of intent to cause grave injury after an incident involving a man named Vilikesa Bari on November 17 of this year.
During a court session on Friday, Police Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma submitted a request to transfer the case to the High Court, which was subsequently approved by Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi.
Colamoto has been released on bail under several conditions, including the payment of a $100 cash bond, provision of two sureties, surrender of all travel documents, a stop departure order, a prohibition on reoffending, and an instruction to avoid contact with state witnesses.
The next court date for Colamoto is set for January 20, 2025, at which time he will receive essential disclosures and enter his plea. He has been given the opportunity to consult with a Legal Aid lawyer.
This transfer highlights the seriousness of the allegations and the judicial process’s commitment to ensuring a fair trial. It is a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency within law enforcement.
In summary, Constable Colamoto’s case will now proceed to a higher court, where he will face serious charges. The conditions of his bail reflect the court’s efforts to maintain justice and prevent further incidents. This situation serves as a critical moment for evaluating professional conduct within the police force and reinforcing trust in the legal system.
