Defending champions Army will face a tough challenge at the Pemtel Paperchase Kasavu Sevens taking place at Ratu Cakobau Park, as they will be without key players Jope Tuikabe and Setareki Tawake. The absence of these national representatives may significantly affect their chances in the tournament.

National coach Peni Veidreyaki had hoped they would be available after expressing a desire to test player combinations this weekend. In a prior article, he mentioned that having the national team together at a tournament like the Kasavu Sevens would be invaluable for their preparation.

Marika Luveniyali, the secretary of the Kasavu tournament, assured fans that despite the absence of the national side, the event would still showcase top-quality sevens rugby. “We had to turn down several number two teams, but we have the big teams in the East ready to compete,” Luveniyali stated, highlighting the depth of talent in the tournament.

The 2023 edition of the Paperchase Sevens has attracted a record 80 teams, a significant increase from its humble beginnings in 1969, when only 24 teams competed. The tournament continues to grow, with sponsors contributing to elevate the event’s profile and expose emerging talents in rugby.

The financial backing from Paperchase has ensured a prize pool of $5,000, from which $2,000 will go to the winning team. The organizers are optimistic that next year’s tournament will be even bigger and better.

While Army must regroup in the absence of their stars, attention will shift to other competitive teams such as Natuicake, Waimanu, Nausori Prisons, and Marist. The Fire team, which faced Army recently, is also set to participate at the Nasinu sevens, indicating a vibrant rugby scene across the region.

The pool games commenced at Ratu Cakobau Park, with matches beginning at 9 am, and at the Golf ground from 3 pm. Ticket prices are very accessible at $3 for adults and $1 for children, making it an excellent family outing and an opportunity to support local rugby talent.

In summary, while Army may face difficulties without its key players, the spirited nature of the Kasavu Sevens promises an exciting showcase of rugby talent. The tournament embodies the growth of the sport in Fiji, with continued efforts to enhance its appeal and level of competition.
