Archbishop Peter Loy Chong is currently recovering at Aspen Lautoka Hospital following a heart failure incident that necessitated emergency surgery. According to a statement from the Catholic Church, the Archbishop was admitted on September 5 due to an intestinal obstruction he developed while attending a Leadership Fiji workshop at the Shangri-La Fijian Resort in Sigatoka.

Initially placed under observation, the Archbishop’s condition worsened when his heart rate increased, prompting an earlier-than-planned surgical intervention. On the operating table, he suffered a heart attack, but the medical team acted swiftly, stabilizing him and proceeding with an emergency surgery at 3:30 a.m. to address the obstruction. Remarkably, the obstruction had resolved itself naturally, although there was inflammation in the small intestine that required treatment.

After the operation, the Archbishop was moved to the Intensive Care Unit and later to the Coronary Care Unit for ongoing cardiac monitoring. By September 15, Archbishop Chong showed significant improvement in his health, with a steady recovery making the medical team optimistic about his healing journey.

In expressing his gratitude, Archbishop Chong conveyed heartfelt thanks to all those who offered prayers and support during his critical condition. This incident underscores the importance of prompt medical intervention and the dedication of healthcare professionals working in high-pressure situations.

The Archbishop’s health scare also serves as a reminder of the critical need for advanced medical care within the local healthcare system. The collaborative efforts displayed by the medical team at Aspen Lautoka Hospital emphasize the positive outcomes that can arise from timely and effective medical responses, fostering hope in the community for continued improvement in healthcare services.
