Age is Just a Number: Inspiring Graduation Story of Gauri Devi Raj

Gauri Devi Raj, a 50-year-old from Nakama outside Labasa, is an inspiring testament to the idea that age is not a barrier in the pursuit of one’s dreams. On April 15, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in counseling from Fiji National University, demonstrating that with dedication and conviction, anyone can achieve their goals.

Growing up in a rural farming community, Ms. Raj was raised with strong values of hard work and responsibility, often assisting her father with farming tasks alongside her three sisters. This foundation instilled in her the perseverance necessary to navigate her educational journey. Balancing teaching responsibilities with her studies was a significant challenge, often requiring her to prioritize her coursework during evenings after a full day at school. Despite the demanding schedule, which sometimes extended late into the night, Ms. Raj highlighted the importance of family support in overcoming these hurdles.

Her goal is now to specialize in counseling, focusing on mental health, trauma recovery, and personal growth. She hopes to lead community programs that promote resilience and well-being while advocating for improved mental health support systems. Ms. Raj’s journey underscores the value of perseverance and adaptability when facing challenges.

She encourages others to embrace opportunities for growth without fear, advising them to surround themselves with supportive individuals and to celebrate even the smallest achievements. “Challenges will arise, but viewing them as opportunities will strengthen your resolve,” she expressed.

Similar stories of perseverance abound, such as that of Rumaana Vualiku Sheikh, who graduated at 31 after returning to school following a decade away, juggling her education with employment. This theme embodies a broader message: it is never too late to achieve one’s dreams, echoing the sentiments of individuals like Priyashna Shivangni Sagar and Sainimere Kurumaira, who have similarly surmounted adversities to reach their educational goals.

In a world that often tells people they are “too old” to start anew, Ms. Raj’s achievements stand as a beacon of hope. They encourage every individual to pursue their aspirations, regardless of age or circumstance, reinforcing the belief that with tenacity and support, success is attainable for everyone.
